FAQs

If your question isn’t answered here, contact us

Are the tours difficult?

Our under 25 km tours are not meant to be difficult and they run at a relaxed pace. That being said, it’s important that you are comfortable riding a bicycle in an urban setting. Our over 25 km tours may involve a few larger hills and they go a little bit faster while still taking in the sights. It is very important that you do an honest self-assessment of your cycling skills. Only you can judge your level of comfort when riding.

What do I need to bring on a tour?

Comfortable riding clothes to match the weather, closed shoes, some cash, a camera if you like, sun glasses and sunscreen. You can rent a strong and well-maintained bike from us (hybrid or road) and helmet or bring your own bike and helmet.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Yes, all guests are required to wear a helmet at all times when on a bicycle. Sorry, but no exceptions. Please bring your own helmet as it works best if this important safety item is correctly sized to your head. However, if you don’t have a helmet or don’t bring one, we can provide one – please let us know in advance.

What is the minimum age requirement for the tours?

The minimum age for all of our tours is 14 years old. We wish we could accommodate everyone but, unfortunately, there are no exceptions.

Insurance?

You must sign a waiver before the tour begins that certifies that you have insurance to cover you in the event of needing medical treatment and to cover any losses associated with participation in the cycling tour.

How do I book a tour?

Go to our tour calendar page. Choose the tour that interests you. Complete all the necessary information including cell phone number and the name of your hotel, your height and if there are any issues we should know about you. You’ll receive a confirmation email within minutes which you must then reply to/confirm to complete the booking. If there’s more to add/you’re part of a group, you can add them at that time. And that’s it. If we see that a tour is filling up, we’ll try to add another one on the same day so that we can accommodate everyone.

I’d rather speak to someone. Can I make a reservation over the phone?

Certainly. Give us a call, locally, at 613 233 0126 or toll free 1 800 360 5725. We can take your information and make your reservation over the phone.

How do I get to the start location?

Directions are provided on booking. We’re an easy walking distance from most downtown hotels.

What time should I show up for my tour?

Please arrive a minimum of 15 minutes ahead of your tour’s scheduled departure time (20 or 30 minutes ahead is ideal). You will need some time to fill out and sign a waiver form, get acquainted with your new bike and adjust your helmet straps. If you arrive late, the tour may have already left. If you are going to be late please call to let us know.

Do we stop for a drink?

Yes, great food too on some of our tours, but you have to pay yourself. You can also use the washroom (for free).

Will we see wildlife?

We’ve seen many fine examples so, depending on the tour you choose (hint: Gatineau Hills), maybe you will too. FYI: If your name is Brian, your chances double. Bring a camera.

What happens if I have a problem on the ride?

Your guide has both the knowledge and the tools to repair a flat or fix a minor mechanical problem. If you cannot complete the ride, we will arrange transportation for you and the bike back to the starting location.

What about bad weather?

We will ride in the rain but the ride may be cancelled due to severe weather. We reserve the right to cancel the ride up to an hour before the start time in the event of severe or unsafe weather conditions. If the forecast calls for 80% or higher of rain, we will most likely cancel. The phone number you provided on booking will be contacted. If we cancel the ride, those who have booked will be allowed to reschedule (subject to availability) or receive credit for a future ride.

What is your refund policy? What if I have to cancel?

Tours cancelled with 48 hours notice or more will receive a full refund. Less than 48 hours, there is no refund. We appreciate your understanding.

Do I tip my guide?

This is entirely up to you. If you think your guide did a good job, then your guide would very much appreciate a tip. Tip whatever you feel is appropriate.

Do you offer custom and private group tours?

Yes! We’re happy to customize a tour to you or your group’s riding level, time constraints or specific points of interest. Rates vary dependent on the length of the tour.

Can I give an Ottawa Cycling Tours’ tour to someone else?

Yes, and very thoughtful! Want to get your visitors or in-laws out of the house and get in their good books at the same time? Then you’ve come to the right place for an original gift. You can book a voucher that can be used for any of our bike tours. Contact us.
